Harvesting corn for silage
Harvesting corn for silage is one of the key processes in agriculture, especially in dairy and beef cattle farming. Corn for silage is valued for its high energy content, ease of fermentation and good effects on animal health and performance. At Agrocontractor, we know that the optimal time to harvest corn is crucial and depends on the dry matter content of the crop. Typically, the best time to harvest is when the corn grain reaches the milk-wax stage, which corresponds to about 30-35% dry matter in the whole plant. At this time, corn contains an optimal balance between the energy provided by the grain and the fiber from the stalks and leaves, which ensures high quality silage. Harvesting requires the use of specialized machinery – corn harvesters that simultaneously cut the crop, shred it and transport it to storage.
